Learning how to create beautiful, creative voicings without sounding too thick or clunky can be a challenge. Here’s an easy system that can help.
STEP 1: Play the melody with your right hand using your 4th or 5th fingers.
STEP 2: With your left hand, add the root, 3rd, and 7th (or 6th depending).
STEP 3: Add the 9th, 13th, 11th, or any other pretty notes you’re hearing under the melody using the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd fingers in your right hand.
And that’s it! Follow these three simple steps and experiment with different rhythms and counter melodies and you’ll have great sounding solo piano voicings in no time. Check out the chart and video below of me implementing these techniques over the jazz standard “Someday My Prince Will Come”.
