4-Note Rootless Voicings

4-note rootless voicings are a staple of every jazz pianist’s voicing arsenal. These are built using the shell (3rd and 7th) and adding two color notes (usually the 5th, 9th, 11th, or 13th).

An efficient way to practice these is to run them over a short set of chord changes chromatically. I’ve chosen the A section of “I Got Rhythm” for this exercise. Note that the higher you go, the more you have to use different inversions to keep the chords in a good range.
